Saseruwa had been a Buddhist monastery in the second century BC with more than 100 rock caves. Ruins of stupas, ancient moonstones and stone inscriptions are on the site. It is situated at Galgamuwa, in the Kurunegala district of North Central province.One has to climb more than three hundred steps to reach the somewhat incomplete 13 meter high statue of Buddha carved on a rock There are two image houses in caves on the front and the back of the huge rock. The image house in front of the rock has been done by King Walagamba in 89-77 BC. At the entrance is a beautiful dragon arch & a seated Buddha statue with numerous wall paintings.At the back image house lies a massive 39 feet long reclining Buddha with numerous other Buddha statues and wall paintings.
