Maha Saman Devalaya is a shrine dedicated to the god Saman. It is situated 3 kilometers from Ratnapura. The god Saman is considered to be the guardian of area. The devale was built by Arya Kamadeva, one of the ministers of the king Parakramabahu II (1263-1270 AD), When the Portuguese captured Ratnapura, the ancient shrine that stood at this location was destroyed and a Portuguese church was constructed on top of it. When the Kandyan kingdom recaptured Ratnapura, the Portuguese church was destroyed and the shrine was rebuilt. This devale holds a clolourful perehera in the month of August every year.
